Truckers and lorry drivers should have a few pieces of essential safety kit with them on the road. Whether it is precautionary, have broken down or even been injured, it is important that they have the correct kits and apparatus to ensure their own and other drivers’ safety.
Guidance handbook
With all the road legislation in place it is important that drivers of large vehicles have something on hand as a guide to avoid penalties and also for safety purposes. Conveniently sized tachograph handbooks for operators and drivers can be purchased, which have guidance on important topics such as Drivers’ Hours Rules, the frequency and duration of breaks that should be taken and information on digital and analogue tachographs.
High visibility waistcoat

Accident record book
In the event of an injury or accident occurring whilst on duty, it is vital that a record is kept, of the nature of the incident and when it occurred. It also vital, for the purpose of investigations or insurance claims, that an accurate account of the incident is recorded.
Motorist first aid kit
It goes without saying, and is a legal requirement for access to a first aid kit in every workplace. Working on the road does not mean drivers are exempt from this access. A compact kit is ideal for people on the move and all dressings included in the kit should be sealed to ensure hygiene and safety. The box will be clearly marked as a first aid kit and should contain latex gloves, surgical tape, plasters, cotton wool balls, stretch bandages, dressings, moist wipes, first aid scissors and a guidance leaflet. Keep a list of helpful telephone numbers in the kit.
Trucker’s atlas
It may seem obvious, but drivers cannot always rely on their satellite navigation systems. Having a handy atlas is important for when you find yourself in a tricky situation. As well as regular driver’s atlases, there are also trucker’s atlases available too. They provide essential information for truck and lorry drivers, with more relevant map detail than regular road atlases.
Static speed camera locations are usually pinpointed as well as mobile speed camera listings. In a good trucker’s atlas the essential information will also be included with a truckstop and roadside café directory, as well as identifying ‘bashed’ bridges and Channel Tunnel and terminal maps.
